Pilates for Kids

by Tamara Warry

What a year so far. Covid-19? We didn’t see that coming… Isolation? Did we even know what that was before 2020? It’s definitely something our children have not known before.

When we look at how the past few months have affected our little ones, it may cause us concern for their overall health. Less movement, anxiety, more screen time. Ok, lots more screen time. But honestly, what other choice has there been?

By now, many of you are probably desperate for some fun, new and exciting ways to entertain the kids, imagine if you could incorporate physical activity into their daily routine at the same time?

Let’s face it, we all love a worn-out kid.

Well, Pilates may be your answer.

Because children are still developing, their bones need strengthening through exercise. Pilates stimulates bone formation, and is a safe, low-impact workout for children.

As Ken Endelman, CEO of Balanced Body Pilates explains:

“Pilates is a mind and body discipline, so it can guide kids to a stronger body, and a more relaxed state of mind. Working to strengthen their bodies can increase children’s self esteem, stamina, abdominal strength and sleep. That, combined with the focused breathing techniques essential to the exercises, Pilates can help kids attain a much more serene and less stressful outlook.”

Kids love new challenges and seem to have a level of energy that most adults can really only dream about. The right Pilates instructor can be very good at engaging younger ones with fun poses like Superman, Cat Stretch, and Criss Cross to name a few!

Contact your local Pilates Studio and ask if they offer classes for kids or get online and explore the world of Pilates for Kids!
